The International Old Time Fiddlers' Contest and Workshop
The International Old Time Fiddlers' Contest and Workshop is held each year in early June at the International Music Camp, located in the beautiful International Peace Garden. Established in 1956, the music camp has provided joy and education to generations of youth from around the world. The fiddle contest draws top competitors, workshops are held for beginners through advanced fiddlers, and the instructors are top notch. There is a lot of jamming in the friendly environment that is so much a part of this area. It is a great experience for fiddlers of all ages and skill levels.
The 2003 International Old Time Fiddlers Contest and Workshop was held June 5th, 6th, and 7th. The 2004 International Old Time Fiddlers Contest and Workshop was held June 10th, 11th, and 12th. Instructors were Ann Schluter (beginning fiddling), Jimmie Tengesdal, and Buddy Spicher (Advanced). Judges were Carl Plohman, Jimmie Tengesdal, and Brian Michalenko. This was a great event and a good time was had by all. The instructers did a marvelous job, Joe Alme and his staff are as good as it gets, and the organization was superb. Nels Olson, John Andrus and BOTMAND kept things running smoothly. Several volunteers provided accompaniement, including Yvette Carrierre, Winnipeg, MB, Randy Lemm, Hillsboro, ND, Phil Jore, Williston, ND, and Dane Kreidelcamp, Valley City,ND. A big "Thanks" to all.
The Turtle Mountain Metis Cultural Dancers put on a wonderful show of this exciting tradition. It was a wonderful example of traditional fiddle and dance. There were opportunities for informal performances by attendees and these were a lot of fun. I hope you will all join us in 2005 for a great family happening. Images are available here.
The first North Dakota Old Time Fiddlers Association benefit performance happened in Hettinger ND on Sunday, August 24, 2003 and was co-sponsored by Dakota Buttes Museum and NDOTFA. Performers were Preston Schmidt, Erik Olson, John O. Lardinois, John J. Lardinois and Jim Tengesdal. Fresh from multiple victories at The National Old Time Fiddle Contest in Weiser Idaho, this group stopped in Hettinger long enough to show everyone a good time. The event was organized by Nels Olson and Betty Svihovec and was by all accounts a great success. Here are some images.
