August 2, 2003
Colorado Open Fiddle Contest
Larimer County Fairgrounds
Loveland, CO
Cody Robinson

This is the second year for this contest. Last year it drew many of the top players in the US. Cody placed in the top ten of the Grand National Championship 2003 at Weiser and she knows fiddling! Highly recommended!

August 3, 2003 (Sunday)
8th Annual High Plains Fiddle Fest
Elbert County Fairgrounds
Kiowa, CO
Rita Cayou

I don't have personal knowledge of this contest, but I suspect it's going to be good because players going to the Colorado Open will also go to this one.

August 2-6, 2004
Tony Ludiker Fiddle Camp
Twinlow Camp's Selkirk Conference Center
Lower Twin Lake, Rathdrum, ID
(Spokane, WA - Coeur d'Alene, ID area)
Tony Ludiker

Tony Ludiker has won the Grand National Championship at Weiser FIVE times! He's a superb teacher and is one of the main reasons we've kept going back to Weiser year after year. If you want to learn contest fiddling, this is a great opportunity. Plus, august in Idaho is HUCKLEBERRY season. Coeur d'Alene in August is absolutely gorgeous. You can't go wrong on this one!!

August 6-7, 2004
Minnesota State Oldtime Fiddle Championship
Cotton High School,Cotton, MN
P.O. Box 205, Cotton, Minnesota 55724.
(218) 482-5549, 482-3351, 482-5592

This is one of the very best fiddle contests in our area. The next-best thing to going to Weiser for the Nationals. Accomodations are kind of tight but dry-camping is available at the high school. Cotton is a good opportunity to meet Lloyd LaPlant, one of the best guitar/mandolin luthiers in the world. His instruments are to die for. There are always a lot of LaPlant instruments in Cotton, not to mention the master himself!

August 15-16, 2003
Always the 3rd Friday and Saturday of August
Oregon Trail Oldtime Fiddle Contest
Loso Hall, Eastern Oregon University
La Grande, OR
Janet Dodson
or (541)963-8588

This one looks like it would be fun just for the historical aspect of the contest. If you go, be sure to let me know what you think!

August 21, 2004
Nationally Certified
Rocky Mountain Regional Fiddle Championship
Casper, WY
Ann Robinson
(307)266-6347, e-mail

Another one of the best fiddle contests next to Weiser. The road from ND to Casper will take you right through the Teapot Dome oilfield. Read about the great Washington scandal during the McKinnley administration before you make the drive. Casper always has good fiddlers and great jam-sessions before, during and after the contest. Good restaurants and friendly folks. Reasonable motels. We've been going to this contest for years.

October 21-23, 2004
Nationally Certified
Western Open Championships
Tehama District Fairgrounds
Red Bluff, CA
Sharon or Tex Ash
(530)527-6127, e-mail
Web Site

I've never been to this contest, but it's on my lifetime list of things to do! The Western Open consistently draws the top fiddlers in the country, and Tex and Sharon are two of the best people you'll ever meet at Weiser.
